Aim of Yoga is to attain physical, mental and spiritual health. The benefits of yoga are very far reaching indeed. There is no one other exercise avenue you can take that will address all of these issues in one simple session.
There are many different forms of yoga and Power yoga is one of them. Power yoga is a term coined in the West to describe a vigorous fitness based approach to the Vinayasa style of yoga. Vinayasa means “breath-synchronized movement,” and Vinayasa yoga is a series of poses that will move you through the power of inhaling and exhaling. Vinayasa movements are smooth flowing and almost dance-like, which explains why it is sometimes referred to as Vinayasa Flow or just Flow.
The word “power” in the phrase describes the intensity this kind of yoga involves. Though many consider it to be “gym yoga,” this style of practice was originally closely modelled on the Vinayasa Ashtanga (involving eight limbs) method which is often promoted as a modern-day form of classical Indian yoga.
The term power yoga came into common usage in the mid 1990s, in an attempt to make Ashtanga yoga more accessible to western students, though, unlike Ashtanga, power yoga does not follow a set series of poses, so classes can vary widely. With its emphasis on strength and flexibility, power yoga brought yoga into the gyms of America, as people began to see yoga as a way to work out.
Two American yoga teachers are most often credited with the near simultaneous invention of power yoga: Beryl Bender Birch, based in New York, and Bryan Kest, based in Los Angeles. Not coincidentally, both these teachers had studied with Ashtanga master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Using the term power yoga differentiated the intense, flowing style of yoga they were teaching from the gentle stretching and meditation that many Americans associated with yoga.
Power yoga is an impressive form of practice with very stimulating styles. Power yoga will most likely appeal to people who are already quite fit, enjoy exercising, and want a minimal amount of chanting and meditation with their yoga. The core of Power yoga is about a vigorous workout that builds muscles and gets people to sweat. This form of yoga is not for calm, mild or moderate yoga students, and for those who love a fast-paced workout. It is also advised to learn this form of yoga from a qualified Power yoga teacher and not attempt it on their own.
Power yoga moves and exercises have been invented to strengthen the whole body and develop on a person’s willpower. These workout are known to burn calories, improve the muscle mass, reduce fat and increase the Basal Metabolic Rate. People often do power yoga for weight loss. It is generally recommended to do power yoga workout about thrice a week and for 45 minutes each time. Before you start doing power yoga postures to burn calories, you may want to speak with a medical practitioner.
In power yoga, the practitioners hardly stop between the poses and the practice happens in one smooth flow. This is quite like a forceful and powerful aerobic regimen. Power yoga is quite popular with sports enthusiasts who enjoy a strenuous workout and like exercises that can balance various muscle groups.
As against other forms of Yoga, in core power yoga there is very little or almost no stopping between yoga poses. For this reason, it is a powerful and forceful aerobic workout regimen.
Like all styles of yoga, it all has both mental and physical benefits. Physically, sweat expels toxins and re-energizes your body. Mentally, the synchronized breathing relaxes your mind and helps to release any blockage of energy flow throughout your body
